Lamayuru Monastery

The Lamayuru Monastery, also known as the Yung-Drung Gompa, lies around 128 km from Leh. Out of the five buildings constructed originally, only the central hall is left and the rest of the monastery is in ruins.According to legend, there used to be a lake at the place where the monastery stands. It also states that Mahasiddhacharya Naropa, a Buddhist saint, meditated at the site in the 11th century. The monastery has a small temple dedicated to Avalokiteshwara, the manifestation of the compassion of all Buddhas. Murals, frescoes and column paintings representing the Kashmiri style of Buddhist iconography are the major attractions of this monastery. An annual festival called Yuru Kabgyat is organised for two days on the 17th and 18th day of the fifth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. One of the major attractions of the festival is the mask dance performed by the monks of the monastery.
