This westernmost state of India projects out into the Arabian Sea. Its northern region, Kutch, with culturally distinct pastoral communities and exquisite crafts, is a salty desert-cum-marshland, thanks to the sea. The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast expanse of salt flats. The coast cradles the old port-town of Mandvi and coastal temples of Somnath and Dwarka. Gir National Park is the only place in India where Asiatic Lions survive. To the east, big city and hub Ahmedabad, and Surat, are old commercial centres. Gujarat is also the third most industrialised state in the country, with a large presence in textiles and petrochemicals.
