Diskit Village

Diskit Village, located on the edge of a desert on the Shyok Valley, is an administrative centre of the Nubra Valley, consisting of several government offices within it. The village of Diskit is located at an altitude of 3,144 m (10,310 ft) above sea level and sees visitors during winters as well as summers.The Diskit Monastery, which is 350 years old, is the main attraction of this village, which houses a Maitreya Buddha statue, paintings, drums and Tibetan colour-patterned silk. The architecture of the monastery reflects the Tibetan style and culture.The monastery is home to around 100 monks coming from different parts of the world. Monks gather in this monastery in the months of February, to celebrate the festival of the Scapegoat, also known as Desmochhey or Dosmoche. The main attraction of this festival is a mask dance, which is performed by the Lamas to display the victory of good over evil.
