Kolukkumalai Tea Estate

Kokukkumalai Tea Estate lies at a distance of 35 km from Munnar in the state of Tamilnadu, on the high peaks of Western Ghats. Kokukkumalai Tea Estate is the highest tea plantation in the world since it is situated at an altitude of 2440 m (8000 feet) above sea level. This tea estate was established during 1930's by the British. The tea factory at Kokukkumalai is noteworthy for the traditional or orthodox tea-making techniques. Orthodox tea-making consists of seven complex steps such as withering, rolling, sieving, fermenting, drying, fibre extraction and grading. Kokukkumalai Tea Estate, famous for its flavoursome teas, was the winner of Southern Tea Competition conducted by the Golden Leaf India Awards in the year 2005. Kokukkumalai Tea Estate is an isolated place located about 90-minutes drive from Munnar. Situated against the backdrop of mountain ranges of Western Ghats, Kokukkumalai is surrounded by lush hills and valleys. At nights tourists can have a clear view of Kodaikanal from the view point nearby Kokukkumalai Estate.
