Arnala Fort, also known as the Janjira and the Island Fort, is situated in Vasai of the Thane District. The fort was built in 1516 under the patronage of Sultan Mahmud Begda of Gujarat.It was rebuilt in 1530 by the Portuguese settlers and was later conquered by Bajirao Peshwa in 1736. Finally, in 1781 the Arnala Fort came under the control of the British.The fort also includes temples of Lord Shiva, Goddess Bhavani and Ambakeshwar, along with tombs of Hajjali and Shahali. The ideal time to visit the fort is between the months of October and April.
