Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is a great sightseeing destination located in the Murud and Roha Talukas of Raigad District. This sanctuary encompasses an area of 53 sq. km and is located at a distance of about 12 km from Kashid Beach. The sanctuary covers the area lying between the Northern Sahyadri Range and Western Coast of India.This sanctuary has a great historical significance as it was used as a hunting ground by the Siddhi Nawab of the Janjira state. He took initiative in constructing roads and water bodies within this sanctuary and for this, several villages in and around the sanctuary were evacuated.Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to different species of animals, birds, reptiles and insects. Sambar, barking deer, panther and wild boar are some of the wild animals found here. There are about 148 species of birds found in the sanctuary. Pied hornbill, black eagle, malkoha, forest wagtail are some of the species of birds living here.Among other species are Asian paradise flycatcher, Iora, plum headed parakeet and the yellow footed green pigeon. Tourists here can also find both poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. Blue mormon, common map and black prince are some of the species of butterflies found in this sanctuary.This sanctuary also houses around 710 species of plants like ficus, jamba, teak and many more. Medicinal plants like clitoria biflora, ramphicapa longifoliaand others are also found here.
