Fort Terekhol is situated on the banks of Terekhol River in the northern part of Goa. The Terekhol River forms the border between Goa and Maharashtra. The fort was constructed in 17th century by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the emperor of Sawantwadi. In 1788, the Fort Terekhol was recognised as the part of Goa. Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida, the Portuguese viceroy, rebuilt this fort in 1764.In the early 19th century, this fort was used by Dr. Bernardo Peres Da Silva as the military base to attack the Portuguese. A part of the Fort Terekhol is in ruins and another section serves as a hotel. There is a church inside the fort which is named as St. Anthony Church. This church is not meant for public visit but is open during the time of annual feast in May.
