Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

The Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple is a famous Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple enshrines one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is located adjacent to the famous Ellora Caves, at a distance of 11 km from Daulatabad, near Aurangabad of Maharashtra State. Beside Ghrishneshwara, the resident Shiva Linga is also revered by the name of Grushmeswara, Kusumeswarar and Ghushmeswara. The temple has been reconstructed twice, once in the 16th century A.D and another time in the 18th century A.D. The temple features a five tier Shikara, covered with images of bulls and monkeys. The temple is visited by bulk of pilgrims. Important festival like Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in this temple.It is said that an ardent devotee, named Kusuma, used to worship Lord Shiva at this place. When her son was killed by the jealous first wife of her husband, Lord Shiva miraculously offered rebirth to her son as a way of rewarding her devotion. Devotees and pilgrims offer prayer at the place with high dedication and reverence.
