Lenyadri Caves

The Lenyadri Caves is a series of around 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves, situated close to Junnar in Pune district of Maharashtra. These caves date back to the 1st and the 3rd century AD and are located towards the north-west bank of Kukadi River.Out of these caves, the seventh cave is dedicated to the shrine of Lord Ganesha. This temple is one of the Ashtavinayak temples and is visited by a large number of devotees. It is also known as Shri Girijatmaka among natives and has 283 stairs in total. Apart from this, the sixth and fourteenth cave are Chaityagrhas and others are Viharas.All these caves are maintained by the Archaeological Department of India. Travellers can also explore various other caves located close to the Lenyadri Caves such as the Manmodi Caves, the Shivneri Caves and the Tulija Lena Caves.
