Global Vipassana Pagoda

The Global Vipassana Pagoda is situated near Manori and has relics of Gautam Buddha. The foundation of the Pagoda was laid in 1997 and the construction was completed in 2008. It has a huge central hall that can accommodate 8,000 students.The pagoda has three sub-domes and the foremost dome was completed in October 2006. It is one of the largest hollow stone masonry structures in the world having Gautam Buddha's relics. The remaining domes have been placed on the top of the first dome. The Global Vipassana Pagoda also has bone relics, discovered in a stupa at Sanchi, which were jointly donated by the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the Mahabodhi Society.The pagoda has a Myanmar Gate, which is an arch at the entrance of the complex. The arch has been decorated with Burmese designs. There is also a Buddha statue carved out of marble. The idol is about 21.5 m high and weighs about 80 metric tonnes.An open Bell Tower, designed in the Burmese architectural style, is also a part of the complex. The bell is around 8 m high and weighs nearly 14 metric tonnes. It was made in Myanmar. Another prominent structure is the Gong Tower, which is a replica of the Bell Tower. The only difference is that instead of a bell, the tower has a circular gong.
