The Belapur Fort, located near the town of Belapur in Navi Mumbai, was built by the Siddis of Janjira. However, it was later conquered by the Portuguese and then by the Marathas. In the early 19th century, the fort was captured by the British. After the British took control, the significance of the fort declined and was not used.This fort has just one bastion remaining among the many, which is located near the highway to Uran. This fort was supposed to be built by the Siddis of Janjira between 1560 and 1570. The fort was recaptured by the Portuguese during 1682, which also controlled the entire region under the Siddis, near Belapur.It later came under the control of the Marathas, who ruled the region until 23rd June 1817, when finally the fort was captured by the British East India Company. The British destroyed the fort partially due to their policy of razing any Maratha rule in the area.There is an underground tunnel at this fort that is believed to connect the fort with Gharapuri Island, which has the famous Elephanta Caves.
