About a kilometre from the Alibaug Beach, in the coastal part of Alibaug is the Kolaba Fort. As per the historical evidences, it clearly states that this 25 ft high and 350 ft wide sea fort was built by Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1680. Kolaba Fort is popular for the numerous battles held, between Siddis and the Marathas. Also, there are the evidences of the battles held between the Portuguese and the British.Several ancient carvings and designs can be seen at the entrance of this fort in the shapes of elephants, tigers and peacocks. The entrance of the fort also includes sacred shrines of different Hindu gods and goddesses, especially the temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha built near the sweet water pond. This fort is owned and maintained by the Archaeological Survey Department of India.
