Wood Fossil Park

Wood Fossil Park is just 17 km away from the main city of Jaisalmer. It is located on Barmer Road and features large fossils of around 180 million years old. Some of these fossils include the remains of a forest which was submerged in the sea.The Wood Fossil Park is also known as the Akal Fossil Park, which has an ambience similar to the prehistoric Jurassic era. This park covers a bare hillside area of around 10 sq. km and consists of 25 petrified tree trunks.The park has fossils of tree trunks which measure around 13 metre in length and 1.5 metre in diameter. In addition, it has a preserved area of 21 hectares, which is thronged by tourists. Visitors interested in studying fossil remains can seek permission from the Department of Tourism, Jaisalmer.Both cabs and auto rickshaws are available from the fort to reach the Akal Fossil Park.
