Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to the chief deity of city of Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath. One of the incarnations of Lord Shiva, the temple was originally dedicated to Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, which is present within the temple premises. The Vishwanath Jyotirlinga at Varanasi is among the twelve Jyotirlingas of India having high religious significance.The present shape of the temple was constructed by Late Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, princess of Indore, in 1780. A Naubatkhana was built in front of the temple by Collector Mohammad Ibrahim Khan in 1785. The two beautiful domes of the temple were covered with gold donated by Punjab Kesari Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in 1839. However, at present, the third dome is uncovered and government authorities of Uttar Pradesh have shown keen interest for gold plating of the third dome of temple.Overlooking the whole city of Kashi, the temple is located on the banks of holy river Ganges. A view of burning Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is considered to be the most sacred event by the natives of the destination. The temple was visited by many great saints including Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Goswami Tulsidas, Adi Shankaracharya and Gurunanak Dev.
