Malayattoor Church

Malayattoor Church, one of the holy shrines of Christian faith, is located on Malayattoor Hill, which is surmounted at an average elevation of around 609 m. The name of the church is kept on the name of the village, in which it is constructed. Malayattoor is a combination of three words that mean Mala or Mountain, Arr or River and Oore or Place. The combination states that the site is a meeting place of mountain, river and land. Situated on the banks of river Periyar, the church is dedicated to St. Thomas, who is believed to have prayed at this holy site. It is believed that site is purified by the foot steps of St. Thomas, the Apostle, who brought Christianity in the region. Malayatoor Perunal is the popular festival celebrated in the church during the months of March and April.
