Cheraman Juma Masjid

Cheraman Masjid is one of the famous religious spots in Kodungallur. The history of this Masjid dates back to 629 AD, when Kodungallur was ruled by Cheraman Perumals. Kodungallur is believed to be the first place in India to welcome Islam religion. The Cheraman King, who ruled over the ancient port city of Muchiripattanam or Muziris, went to Arabia and embraced Islam. His death-wish was to construct a mosque at Muchiripattanam, which was carried out by the King of Jeddah. But the port city of Muchiripattanam was destroyed in the flood of 1341. The present mosque at Kodungallur, the second masjid, is also known by the name 'Cheraman Perumal Juma Masjid.
