Kiradu Ancient Temples

The Kiradu Ancient Temple is a group of five temples located in Hathma village, some 39 km from the city of Barmer. According to an inscription belonging to 1161 AD, Hathma was once known as Kiratkoop and was the capital of the Panwara dynasty.The largest among the group of five is the Someshvara Temple which was built in the 11th century and is devoted to Lord Shiva. This temple has a multi-turreted tower and sculptures of the various gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology. The inner chamber has a figure of the god and at the base there is a lotus in a reversely curved shape.Most of the temple carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana. The temple walls contain figures of apsaras and vyalas. The other four temples are dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva.
