It is also said that the pillar was first erected at Kaushambi, which is an ancient town located at a distance of around 30 km to the west of Allahabad. Kaushambi was initially the capital of the Kosala kingdom. The Ashokan inscription present on the pillar is in Brahmi which dates back to 232 BC. A later inscription on this pillar was attributed to the second king of the Gupta Empire, Samudragupta. The inscription by him is in the more refined Gupta script, which is considered to be a later version of Brahmi that dates back around 375 CE.
