Allen Forest Zoo

Allen Forest Zoo is situated about two kilometres from the Kanpur city centre. Popularly known as, Kanpur Zoo, this zoo is the largest open green space in Kanpur. The zoo was open for public in 1971 and covers a land area of about 194249.108 sq. m. The zoo encompasses natural lake, ancient trees and natural forest. This zoo was found by Sir Allen, who was a botanist as well as a member of the British Indian Civil Service.This zoo is home to mammals like White Asian tigers, rhinoceros, Asiatic lions, cheetah, hyena, leopard and jaguar. Other mammals like black bear, grizzly bear, sloth bear, monkeys, and langoor, can also be spotted in the zoo. Chimpanzees, baboons, musk deer, orangutans are some of the other inhabitants of the zoo. Indian gharial is the only amphibian that inhabits the zoo.The main attraction of the zoo is the botanical garden, which holds the collection of some of the rare species of plants. Rainwater lake, aviary and night house are other major attractions of this zoo. The zoo also houses an aquarium and life size sculptures of pre-historic dinosaurs. Tourist Nature walks and outdoor recreation activities can be enjoyed at this zoo. The zoo is also an educational site for teaching school students about environmental issues and natural habitats.
